Back to Basics

So another new year is upon us, another 365 days. For alot of us 364 useful days ahead seeing as New Years day is usually a recovery day watching the afternoon film vegged on the sofa. At least this year it wasn't Mary Poppins on BBC 1, instead a DVD of Kung-Fu Panda winning the honours ;-)

One of the first things that springs to mind (after today's hangovers and a life-saving stomach full of brunch) is the subject of resolutions for the year: lose weight, stop smoking, start getting more exercise, bla, bla, bla - usually given up by the time the impact of the February credit card bill comes in and hits us after Christmas festivity spending. Well I have never made any resolutions. Even if I had to get rid of a spare tyre or beer belly, or move on to nicotine patches, I wouldn't make them. Not half-heartedly anyway.

However this year there is something I need to do. There are things to do for this coming year, things that will help make it better, to look forward to, especially seeing as the 'experts' in the media have already filled us with joy with their rants of us to yet reach the dregs of the credit crunch barrel. For me it means going back to basics. Starting from the very start again and working forward.

Things to throw out, excess to drop. Everywhere we look there is too much. Saturation. Whether they are possessions, problems, thoughts, rubbish, credit or debt. I think there is a need to go back to the basics of our lives and concentrate on the truly important things. The solid foundations. And from there we build, brick by brick.

Like in boxing, there are the essentials to learn before you can step in the ring and fight. In the film Million Dollar Baby, the guy played by Morgan Freeman says: "To make a fighter you gotta strip them down to bare wood: you can't just tell 'em to forget everything you know if you gotta make 'em forget even their bones... make 'em so tired they only listen to you, only hear your voice, only do what you say and nothing else... show 'em how to keep their balance and take it away from the other guy... how to generate momentum off their right toe and how to flex your knees when you fire a jab... how to fight backin' up so that the other guy doesn't want to come after you. Then you gotta show 'em all over again. Over and over and over... till they think they're born that way."

I'll let you know in 364 bricks time what I've managed to build. Happy New Year to you all.
